Tear Resistant Paper products are chemically manufactured using
a variety of raw materials such as polyester and silica resins. Three
general categories exist including totally synthetic paper compositions,
laminated papers, and chemically-treated papers.

Inkjet, laser, and color laser and copier compatible papers are in the tables
below. All of these products provide enhanced tear resistance.
These are synthetic papers, hybrids, and chemically-treated papers designed
for various additional qualities such as a water-resistant paper and
waterproof paper.

Power Paper vs. Ruff N Tuff
Differences in
performance explained...
Power Paper is a tear resistant paper available in inkjet and laser
printer / copier versions (see also, next table). It is a superior
waterproof paper with a soft, flexible feel, appropriate for a wide variety
of applications including projects where grommetting, stapling and other
operations may be required. Power Paper tends to stretch when
approaching the tear threshold. Under extreme duress, Power Paper will
warp out of shape but is extremely difficult to tear.
See the inkjet Power Paper page for info on
this tear resistant paper.
Also available, an adhesive-backed
version of Power Paper.
Waterproof consistency on inkjet printers: Results vary on
different inkjet printers due to the differences among water-based inks from
one printer to the next. A trial-pack is recommended for testing a
small quantity before making a larger purchase.
Ruff N Tuff is more "paper realistic" in feel.
It has an excellent resistance to tearing and frequent-use or rough handling,
as well as being a water-resistant paper and a grease/dirt-resistant
paper. If you are concerned only with tear resistance, Ruff N Tuff is
the product we recommend. This is a dual-compatible paper, appropriate
for inkjet and laser printers/copiers.
Refer to the Ruff N Tuff (inkjet) page
for more details.

Power Paper vs. Ruff N Tuff
Differences in
performance explained...
Power Paper for laser printers is a tear resistant paper with excellent waterproof
properties. The advanced synthetic composition provides a unique
bonding strength to provide tear resistance, but which is flexible to
accommodate other operations such as stapling, folding, and grommeting.
It has a soft, flexible feel, without rigidity, despite its relative
thickness at 10 mil. For a cover stock or card stock option, refer to
Ruff N Tuff Gloss.
If you are looking for a strictly tear resistant paper, then Ruff N Tuff is a
more economical option. See below. HP LaserJet Tough paper is
another option with a different look and feel. Comparatively, it is
slick and shinier.
Under an extreme pulling test for tear resistance, laser Power Paper will
stretch first, before any indication of a blunt force rip occurs. For
waterproof purposes, this paper is particularly reliable because the toner
used in laser printers and copiers bonds much more easily to the paper's
composition (as compared to dye-based inkjet printing).
For superior waterproof performance in a tear
resistant paper refer to the laser Power Paper product page for more
information.
Alternate version also available, see waterproof self-adhesive laser paper.
Ruff N Tuff is our ideal recommendation for a tear resistant
paper. It is the least expensive option, but also, the most effective
for most applications. Ruff N Tuff feels much more like genuine,
fiber-based paper than Power Paper or HP LaserJet Tough. In addition,
it will not warp out of shape when put under extreme pull tests when checking
tear resistance. This paper is vulnerable to tearing if a small nick or
cut (i.e. with a pair of scissors) is created on the edge of the paper, which
allows an insertion point where a rip can be made. For non-extreme
tests, frequent paper-handling, outdoor handling, rough handling, etc., Ruff
N Tuff superbly proves itself.
Refer to the product details on the Ruff
N Tuff laser page.
Ruff N Tuff Gloss is a glossy, two-sided cover stock (card
stock comparable thickness). It bears reasonable tear resistance, but
is offered more for its advantage as a water-resistant and grease-resistant
paper for display applications. For example, Ruff N Tuff Gloss when
used for the pages of a children's book will survive fingerprints, spills,
and rough handling.

N Tuff Gloss
